Azra Games, a blockchain game studio led by seasoned RPG builder Mark Otero, has secured $10 million in seed funding to develop Legions & Legends, a sci-fi fantasy RPG. The funding round was led by a16z Crypto, with participation from other Web3 VCs, including NFX, Coinbase Ventures, Play Ventures, and Franklin Templeton.
With this latest funding round, Azra Games has raised a total of $25 million to develop Legions & Legends, which is set to be a AAA blockchain title. The game will allow players to lead valiant heroes to battle terrifying monsters and earn significant rewards. Mark Otero has brought together the best talents to work on the project, many of whom have previously worked on well-known titles such as Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Apex: Legends, and Battlefield.
Arianna Simpson, General Partner at a16z Crypto, commented on Azra Games' unique approach, stating that "their gameplay-comes-first philosophy will appeal deeply to traditional players and game developers, as well as crypto natives." The game will eventually launch on PC and mobile devices, but Azra Games has already released a set of NFT PFPs called The Hopeful collection, which holders can use to gain pre-launch access to Legions & Legends and future Azra titles.
While NFTs will be used in the game, Fortune reported that they will not be the foundation of the gameplay. The focus will be on creating a fun and engaging gaming experience that will attract traditional players and game developers alike. With continued support from investors like a16z Crypto and other Web3 VCs, Azra Games is well-positioned to make a name for itself in the blockchain gaming industry.
